Packing goes faster when you stop treating the whole house as one job. Work room by room, finish what you start, and keep an "open first" kit so the first night isn't spent hunting for sheets and chargers.
[ ] Empty and dry washer/dishwasher before movers arrive if your mover requires it
Garage / outdoor
[ ] Dispose of banned movers' items early (many won't take open chemicals, fuels, or propane)
[ ] Drain garden equipment as required
[ ] Pack tools last if you still need them for disassembly
Open-first boxes (pack these on purpose)
Limit to one or two boxes per person, plus one kitchen box:
Sheets, pillows, towels
Toiletries and medications
Phone/laptop chargers
Toilet paper, soap, paper towels
Snacks, coffee/tea, a kettle or coffee maker
Basic tools (scissors, screwdriver, box cutter)
Trash bags, light bulbs
Kids' or pets' comfort items
Put "OPEN FIRST" on two sides and the top.
What to carry yourself
Never put these only on the truck: passports, IDs, cash, jewelry, prescription meds, checkbooks, small heirlooms, external drives, and the folder of lease/closing papers. Keep them in a bag that stays with you.
USPS and address changes
A USPS change of address only updates mail forwarding with the Postal Service. Per USPS guidance, submit the request and verify your identity, then allow at least 7–10 business days for it to take effect. USPS also notes that you are still responsible for telling banks, government agencies, insurers, and other senders your new address — many sensitive mailers (new cards, some government documents) are not forwarded for security reasons. File the change at USPS.com or with PS Form 3575 at a Post Office; watch for unofficial third-party sites that charge high fees.
Moving week (countdown style)
7 days out: finish non-essential rooms; confirm movers; defrost freezer if needed
3 days out: pack most of the kitchen; set aside cleaning supplies
1 day out: pack bedding after you wake; charge devices; stage "travel with me" bag
Moving day: protect floors, walk rooms with the inventory, tick boxes onto the truck, check closets and oven before you leave
Common packing mistakes
Overfilling big boxes with books (they break and strain backs)
Labeling only the top of the box
Packing liquids without sealing them in plastic
Leaving inventory until the end
Forgetting to measure furniture and doorways before the truck is loaded
Want printables and trackers? Our Moving Box Labels & New-Home Kit has color-coded labels, door signs, a 100-box inventory, and a first-week checklist. The Moving Week Planner and Box Log is an editable spreadsheet with an 8-week countdown and box log.
